Retail Media Planning
Off-site commerce advertising
Plan off-site commerce advertising around a defined audience, useful destination, delivery evidence and clearly stated retailer sales measures.
Off-site commerce advertising uses retailer or commerce-platform shopping information to plan, target or measure adverts shown beyond the provider's own shopping properties. Such adverts may appear in social media, video or display inventory.
Decide what the campaign should achieve
Start with one objective: introduce a range to relevant people, bring previous buyers back, or direct shoppers to a product they can buy now. That choice shapes the audience, creative, destination and main measure.
A sales campaign needs a buyable product and a clear route to purchase. An awareness campaign needs reach evidence, including overlap with activity already running where that can be measured.
Format alone does not establish the audience. Nectar360 describes off-site activity across paid social, display and video using purchasing data. Amazon Ads describes display placements on its properties and across third-party apps and websites.
Match inventory and creative to the plan
Inventory choices can affect how the same campaign is experienced. Nectar360 recommends considering Feed, Reels and Stories placements for Meta campaigns, and mobile and desktop sizes for programmatic; its guidance says using a variety of placements can help increase reach and engagement.
Check creative requirements against the booked placements before launch. Nectar360 provides guidance and templates for paid social and programmatic, and recommends clear pack-shots and calling out applicable promotions. It also recommends testing creative and optimising during the campaign towards ads with the highest return on ad spend.
Top Creative Best Practices for Off-site Ads
- Clear pack-shotsShow product accurately with correct variant and pricing
- Highlight promotionsClearly display discounts, offers or free delivery terms
- Test multiple creativesOptimise towards highest return on ad spend (ROAS)
- Adapt for platform formatUse mobile-optimised designs for programmatic, Reels/Stories for Meta
Specify the audience and delivery route
Ask what qualifies someone for the audience: a purchase, another observed action or a modelled classification. Record the products, observed channels, lookback period and refresh schedule.
Establish where the audience can be activated and what delivery evidence the buying platform supplies. The number of people in a source audience is not the number matched or reached.
In the UK, involve the privacy team before activating customer data. The ICO says direct marketing using personal information needs an appropriate lawful basis, fair and transparent use, and respect for objections. A retailer-supplied audience does not settle the responsibilities or lawful basis for every brand and platform using it.
Audience strategies can reflect different growth tasks. Nectar360 describes retaining existing brand buyers, re-engaging lapsed buyers, reaching competitor buyers or using basket modelling to identify prospective customers with similar buying habits. Record the purchase history or modelled behaviour that qualifies someone for the chosen strategy.
Send the click somewhere useful
Choose the destination according to the next action. A retailer product page suits a named item when its variant, price and availability are correct. A retailer range page can help shoppers choose among several stocked products.
A brand site can explain a more involved choice or capture an action the brand controls, provided it offers a clear route to buy when purchase is the goal.
Check the booked format's permitted destinations. Nectar360 describes digital marketing strategies integrated with in-store channels to aid recall at the point of purchase, and direct click-through to the product page on the website.
Agree on evidence before launch
Keep delivery and outcomes separate. Request spend, impressions, viewability where available, clicks, estimated unique reach and frequency. For a sales objective, agree the product set, eligible sales channels, click and view attribution, lookback window, and treatment of cancellations and returns.
An attributed sale is associated with an advert under a stated method. It does not show that the advert caused an additional sale.
Impressions outside a retailer's site do not prove the campaign reached people who had not seen the brand's other adverts. Measure overlap within a suitable reporting population where possible; use a separate comparison design if the decision requires a causal sales claim.
End the brief with the decision each result would prompt. If reach largely duplicates the existing plan, reconsider inventory or frequency. If people click but cannot find the promised product, fix the destination. If a sales figure lacks a necessary definition, state that limit before using it to move budget.
Nectar360 describes its campaigns as able to report conversion data and demonstrate incremental growth, and to optimise on actual sales data as well as media metrics.
It says DTP Insights can report sales generated both in-store and online by Nectar customers exposed to a campaign, and describes brand-uplift analysis. Confirm which of these measures is available for the specific booking.
Plan the sales measurement product set early. Nectar360 advises deciding which stock-keeping units (SKUs) to measure; measuring a product range can give new or challenger brands more data for optimisation decisions. Match the reporting scope to the campaign question rather than assuming it covers every product or sales channel.
Measurement Metrics for Off-site Campaigns
- Impressions
- Total views delivered
- Click-through rate (CTR)
- Percentage of users who clicked after seeing ad
- Estimated unique reach
- Number of distinct individuals exposed to the campaign
- Attributed sales
- Sales linked to ad exposure via agreed method
