Retailer Comparisons

Comparing self-service and managed retailer campaigns
Compare self-service and managed retail media campaigns by task ownership, account controls, change processes, fees and reporting access.
Choose the operating arrangement your team can support for the proposed campaign. Self-service gives direct access to the controls a provider makes available. A managed arrangement assigns more work to the provider. Neither label tells you who can change a particular placement, approve creative or inspect results, so agree those tasks before booking.
Map the work
Ask who selects the products and placements, prepares and approves creative, books the media, changes bids or budgets, responds to stock problems, reports results and handles billing. Name the person or team responsible for each action and the approvals they need.
| Decision point | Self-service question | Managed-service question |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | Can the team configure the exact proposed unit and products? | Who turns the brief into a booking, and who approves it? |
| Changes | Which bids, dates, creative or SKUs can the team alter? | How are changes requested and confirmed? |
| Visibility | Which delivery and sales fields can the account inspect? | Which report and definitions will be supplied? |
| Cost | Which platform, production or support charges apply? | Which tasks are included and which cost extra? |
Ask about the proposed format. Direct control of one product does not establish direct control of every placement from the same provider.
Compare documented operating options
Tesco Media’s Sphere supports self-service planning and buying and multi-channel campaign management. Confirm the account roles, line items and live controls available for your proposed Tesco booking. The public overview does not grant every advertiser control of every placement.
Nectar360 Pollen describes a unified platform for planning, activation and measurement. Nectar360 said in June 2026 that client onboarding was under way and early campaigns were delivering over 2.5x higher impact when using multiple channels. Check which modules and permissions are active for your account, and who approves creative and campaign changes.
Amazon Sponsored Products lets eligible advertisers select products, targeting, bids and budgets in the advertising console. This gives a concrete direct-control example for a team managing Amazon listings. Advertiser and product eligibility still apply, and these controls should not be assumed for another retailer’s formats.
Boots Media Group describes a full-service supplier offer with a dedicated point of contact. Request a managed proposal that names the included production, media and reporting tasks. Its overview does not specify every bookable format or the work included in a quote.

Test the proposed change process on paper
Ask each provider what would happen if a promoted variant became unavailable midway through the campaign. Who would detect it? Who could pause or replace the advert? How would the request be acknowledged? How would the change appear in reporting?
The answers describe a proposed process, not a tested response time.
Record task ownership, account access, change rules, fees and report delivery in the booking terms. That makes the choice between self-service and managed work specific to the campaign your team will run.
