Retailer Comparisons
Part of Approving a UK retailer media campaign brief
Choosing a UK retailer from audience and product fit
Assess Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Argos and Boots media opportunities against product fit, shopping task and distribution.
Choose a retail media partner where the product can be bought and where the shopping context fits the decision your advert addresses. Audience size alone cannot fix poor product or category fit. Start with the exact SKU or variant, then compare distribution, placement and reporting for the proposed booking.
Shortlist by the buying task
Define the product category, intended use and likely shopper task. Check whether each retailer lists the promoted variant and whether shoppers can buy it through the channels the media covers. Ask candidates for the same information: eligible products, relevant pages or audience signals, online and store coverage, destinations, buying access and reporting fields.
The examples below identify reasons to investigate four UK retailers. Their public media pages describe possible offerings, not current inventory, account eligibility or campaign results.
Retailer options to examine
Tesco Media. Use Tesco for a grocery product with relevant Tesco distribution when online, in-store or off-site activity fits the brief. Tesco Media describes all three environments and self-service buying through Sphere. Confirm which formats are available for the product and which, if any, can be bought through Sphere for this campaign.
Sainsbury’s through Nectar360. Consider this for a product in Sainsbury’s grocery journey when search, browsing or a branded range destination suits the task. Nectar360 lists sponsored products, banners and enhanced media for Sainsbury’s Groceries online. Confirm the exact SKU, device, placement and any promotion rules.
Argos through Nectar360. Use Argos for products in its technology, home, garden, toy, appliance or related ranges, especially when shoppers need to compare or locate an item. Nectar360 offers Argos sponsored search and browse placements on web and app, plus a web homepage product carousel. Confirm the variant, placement and device, then check the delivery or collection route.
Boots Media Group. Boots may suit an appropriate health, beauty, wellness or baby product. Boots calls its Media Group a full-service offering for supplier brands, with activity on and off Boots-owned platforms and a dedicated contact.
Its public overview does not supply a complete bookable format list or eligibility rules for a particular product. Confirm supplier and media eligibility, inventory, product listing and reporting directly with the team. A product listing alone does not establish media access.
Compare the proposals
| Question | Request from each retailer |
|---|---|
| Product fit | Eligible SKUs, category mapping and product-page destinations |
| Audience fit | Shopping signal or page context, including coverage and recency where relevant |
| Distribution fit | Online buyability, delivery or collection areas, and store ranging relevant to the booking |
| Media access | Placement, device, dates, buying basis and management model |
| Outcome evidence | Sales product set, channels, attribution windows, gross or net basis, and reporting gaps |
A retailer may suit the product but lack a useful placement for this objective, or offer a suitable placement where distribution is too narrow. Record that to narrow the plan, not a permanent judgement about the retailer.
Choose against the campaign question. For a named item, favour a placement that leads to the correct buyable product. For a range introduction, check whether shoppers can explore the stocked range.
If two proposals remain plausible, compare them with aligned products, dates and definitions where possible. A higher attributed-sales figure alone does not establish which retailer caused more additional demand.
